RICHARD W. “DICK” HURRELL

Of Forest Hills, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Dick was born on November 5, 1920, in Braddock, PA. He was the oldest son of the late George R. and Virginia Redman Hurrell.  Moved to Forest Hills in 1927.  Graduated Wilkinsburg High School in 1938 and attended Carnegie Tech. Enlisted as an Air Force Cadet in 1943.  Earned rank of First Lieutenant and was 1st Pilot on a B-17 Flying Fortress in the European Theatre Operation in WWII, was credited with 51 combat missions. Dick was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, and Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.  Inducted into the Hall of Valor at Soldiers & Sailors in March 2016. Employed at Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh for 43 years. Sang with the Fred Waring Orchestra and the Pennsylvanians in 1938.  Actively served Forest Hills Boro on the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments, and as a Flivver driver. Served on the Executive Committee of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association 1976-1994, and was President in 1983. Former and longtime member of Edgewood Country Club (1958-2013). Husband of the late Virginia Bartlett Hurrell. Survived by daughter, Joanne (Doug) Neely; grandchildren, Kristin and Brian (Jackie) Neely; brother of Virginia Vickers and the late A. Wade Hurrell.
